Laws of indices

For a,b>0a, b > 0:

  • am×an=am+na^m \times a^n = a^{m+n}, am÷an=am−n\quad a^m \div a^n = a^{m-n}, (am)n=amn\quad (a^m)^n = a^{mn}
  • a0=1a^0 = 1, a−n=1an\quad a^{-n} = \dfrac{1}{a^n}, a1n=an\quad a^{\frac{1}{n}} = \sqrt[n]{a}

Logarithms

log⁡ay=x\log_a y = x means exactly the same as ax=ya^x = y. The common logarithm log⁡y\log y means log⁡10y\log_{10} y.

Law
log⁡a(MN)=log⁡aM+log⁡aN\log_a (MN) = \log_a M + \log_a Nproduct
log⁡aMN=log⁡aM−log⁡aN\log_a \dfrac{M}{N} = \log_a M - \log_a Nquotient
log⁡aMn=nlog⁡aM\log_a M^n = n \log_a Mpower
log⁡ab=log⁡blog⁡a\log_a b = \dfrac{\log b}{\log a}change of base

Also log⁡a1=0\log_a 1 = 0 and log⁡aa=1\log_a a = 1.

Common mistake: log⁡(M+N)\log(M + N) is not log⁡M+log⁡N\log M + \log N, and log⁡Mlog⁡N\dfrac{\log M}{\log N} is not log⁡M−log⁡N\log M - \log N.

Graphs

  • y=axy = a^x (a>0a > 0, a≠1a \neq 1) passes through (0,1)(0, 1) and always lies above the xx-axis. It increases when a>1a > 1 and decreases when 0<a<10 < a < 1.
  • y=log⁡axy = \log_a x passes through (1,0)(1, 0) and is defined only for x>0x > 0.
  • y=axy = a^x and y=log⁡axy = \log_a x are reflections of each other in the line y=xy = x.

Solving exponential equations

Take logs of both sides:

3x=20⇒xlog⁡3=log⁡20⇒x=log⁡20log⁡3≈2.733^x = 20 \Rightarrow x \log 3 = \log 20 \Rightarrow x = \frac{\log 20}{\log 3} \approx 2.73

Linear relations with logarithms

If y=kaxy = ka^x, taking logs gives log⁡y=log⁡k+xlog⁡a\log y = \log k + x \log a, so the graph of log⁡y\log y against xx is a straight line with slope log⁡a\log a and intercept log⁡k\log k. DSE often gives such a straight-line graph and asks you to express yy in terms of xx.

Real-life models

Growth or decay at a fixed rate rr per period: A=P(1±r)tA = P(1 \pm r)^t. For example, a car losing 15% of its value every year is worth P(0.85)tP(0.85)^t after tt years.

Exam tip: when a question asks "after how many full years", solve the inequality, then round up to the next whole number and check it.

In the DSE exam

Syllabus scope

You need: laws of integral and rational indices, logarithms and their laws, change of base, graphs of exponential and logarithmic functions, solving exponential and logarithmic equations, the linear relation between log⁡y\log y and xx, and real-life applications.

Not needed: the natural logarithm ln⁡x\ln x and exe^x (these are in Module 1 and Module 2).

How it is tested

  • Paper 2 MC: simplify expressions with logs; pick the graph of y=axy = a^x or y=log⁡axy = \log_a x; "The graph shows a linear relation between log⁡2y\log_2 y and xx ... Express yy in terms of xx."
  • Paper 1: growth and decay problems, often asking for the least number of years.

How to answer

  • Take logs of both sides and show the step: it earns the method mark.
  • Remember that log⁡0.85<0\log 0.85 < 0: dividing by it reverses the inequality sign.
  • Give answers correct to 3 significant figures unless the question says otherwise.
