Slope

The slope of the line through (x1,y1)(x_1, y_1) and (x2,y2)(x_2, y_2) is

m=y2−y1x2−x1m = \frac{y_2 - y_1}{x_2 - x_1}
  • Parallel lines: m1=m2m_1 = m_2.
  • Perpendicular lines: m1m2=−1m_1 m_2 = -1.

Forms of the equation

FormEquation
point-slopey−y1=m(x−x1)y - y_1 = m(x - x_1)
two-pointy−y1x−x1=y2−y1x2−x1\dfrac{y - y_1}{x - x_1} = \dfrac{y_2 - y_1}{x_2 - x_1}
slope-intercepty=mx+cy = mx + c
general formAx+By+C=0Ax + By + C = 0

From the general form Ax+By+C=0Ax + By + C = 0:

slope=−AB,x-intercept=−CA,y-intercept=−CB\text{slope} = -\frac{A}{B}, \quad x\text{-intercept} = -\frac{C}{A}, \quad y\text{-intercept} = -\frac{C}{B}

Common mistake: the slope of 3x−4y+12=03x - 4y + 12 = 0 is −3−4=34-\frac{3}{-4} = \frac{3}{4}. Watch the two minus signs.

Distance, mid-point and point of division

For A(x1,y1)A(x_1, y_1) and B(x2,y2)B(x_2, y_2):

  • Distance AB=(x2−x1)2+(y2−y1)2AB = \sqrt{(x_2 - x_1)^2 + (y_2 - y_1)^2}
  • Mid-point =(x1+x22,y1+y22)= \left(\dfrac{x_1 + x_2}{2}, \dfrac{y_1 + y_2}{2}\right)
  • PP divides ABAB internally in the ratio r:sr : s:
P=(sx1+rx2r+s,sy1+ry2r+s)P = \left(\frac{s x_1 + r x_2}{r + s}, \frac{s y_1 + r y_2}{r + s}\right)

Note the cross-over: ss goes with AA and rr goes with BB.

Intersection of two lines

Solve the two equations simultaneously.

Locus

A locus is the path traced by a moving point PP that satisfies a condition:

Condition on PPLocus
A fixed distance rr from a point CCA circle with centre CC and radius rr
Equidistant from two points AA and BBThe perpendicular bisector of ABAB
Equidistant from two parallel linesA line parallel to both, midway between them
Equidistant from two intersecting linesThe pair of angle bisectors

To find the equation, let P=(x,y)P = (x, y), write the condition with the distance formula, then simplify.

Perpendicular bisector

The perpendicular bisector of ABAB passes through the mid-point of ABAB and has slope −1mAB-\dfrac{1}{m_{AB}}. Every point on it is equidistant from AA and BB.

Exam tip: give the final answer in general form Ax+By+C=0Ax + By + C = 0 with integer coefficients unless the question asks otherwise.

In the DSE exam

Syllabus scope

You need: slope, parallel and perpendicular lines, the equations of a straight line, intercepts, intersection of two lines, distance and mid-point formulas, the point of internal division, and loci (describing a locus and finding its equation).

How it is tested

  • Paper 1 Sections A(2) and B: "Find the equation of LL", "PP is a moving point such that PP is equidistant from AA and BB. Denote the locus of PP by Γ\Gamma. Describe the geometric relationship between Γ\Gamma and ABAB, and find the equation of Γ\Gamma."
  • Paper 2 MC: slope and intercepts from a general-form equation; which graph represents ax+by+c=0ax + by + c = 0 given the signs of aa, bb, cc.

How to answer

  • Give the equation in general form Ax+By+C=0Ax + By + C = 0 unless told otherwise.
  • Describe loci in words, e.g. Γ\Gamma is the perpendicular bisector of ABAB.
