Mean:xˉ=n∑x. For grouped data, use class marks: xˉ=∑f∑fx.
Median: the middle value of the ordered data (average of the middle two if n is even).
Mode: the most frequent value.
Measures of dispersion
Measure
How to find it
Range
largest − smallest
Inter-quartile range (IQR)
Q3−Q1
Standard deviation σ
n∑(x−xˉ)2 (use the calculator)
The IQR is not affected by extreme values; the range and standard deviation are.
Box-and-whisker diagram
It shows five numbers: minimum, Q1, median, Q3, maximum. The length of the box is the IQR.
Effect of changing the data
If every datum x becomes ax+b:
mean, median and mode become a(old)+b;
range, IQR and standard deviation become ∣a∣×(old). Adding b does not change the spread.
Standard score
z=σx−xˉ
It tells you how many standard deviations a value is above or below the mean, so you can compare results from different tests.
Normal distribution
For data that follow a normal distribution, about
68% lie within 1σ of the mean,
95% lie within 2σ,
99.7% lie within 3σ.
Common mistake: adding a constant to every datum changes the mean but not the standard deviation.

Syllabus scope
You need: mean, median and mode (including grouped data), range, inter-quartile range and standard deviation, stem-and-leaf diagrams and box-and-whisker diagrams, standard scores, the normal distribution, and the effects on these measures of adding, removing or changing data.
How it is tested
Paper 1 Section A(2) or B: a stem-and-leaf diagram with unknown digits. "(a) Find the mean, median and standard deviation. (b) Two new data are added; find the least possible range" or "find the change in the standard deviation".
Paper 2 MC: read a box-and-whisker diagram; standard score comparisons; which measures stay unchanged.
How to answer
Use the calculator's statistics mode for the standard deviation, and state the answer to 3 significant figures.
For "remove or add data" questions, check each measure separately: the mean and SD change with every datum, while the median and IQR depend on position.
