Functions

A function assigns exactly one output to each input. We write y=f(x)y = f(x).

  • Domain: the set of allowed inputs xx.
  • Range: the set of outputs yy.

To find f(−2)f(-2) when f(x)=x2−3xf(x) = x^2 - 3x, replace every xx with (−2)(-2), brackets included: f(−2)=(−2)2−3(−2)=10f(-2) = (-2)^2 - 3(-2) = 10.

Graph of a quadratic function

For y=ax2+bx+cy = ax^2 + bx + c:

  • a>0a > 0: opens upwards, has a minimum point.
  • a<0a < 0: opens downwards, has a maximum point.
  • yy-intercept is cc; xx-intercepts are the real roots of ax2+bx+c=0ax^2 + bx + c = 0.

Completing the square

Rewrite y=ax2+bx+cy = ax^2 + bx + c as y=a(x−h)2+ky = a(x - h)^2 + k. Then:

  • the vertex is (h,k)(h, k),
  • the axis of symmetry is x=hx = h,
  • the maximum or minimum value is kk.

Example: y=x2−4x+7=(x2−4x+4)+3=(x−2)2+3y = x^2 - 4x + 7 = (x^2 - 4x + 4) + 3 = (x - 2)^2 + 3. The vertex is (2,3)(2, 3) and the minimum value is 33.

Common mistake: for y=(x+3)2+2y = (x + 3)^2 + 2 the vertex is (−3,2)(-3, 2), not (3,2)(3, 2). The sign flips inside the bracket.

Transformations of graphs

New functionEffect on y=f(x)y = f(x)
y=f(x)+ky = f(x) + ktranslate up kk units
y=f(x)−ky = f(x) - ktranslate down kk units
y=f(x+k)y = f(x + k)translate left kk units
y=f(x−k)y = f(x - k)translate right kk units
y=−f(x)y = -f(x)reflection with respect to the xx-axis
y=f(−x)y = f(-x)reflection with respect to the yy-axis
y=kf(x)y = kf(x)stretch vertically by factor kk
y=f(kx)y = f(kx)shrink horizontally by factor kk

Exam tip: changes inside the bracket act on xx and go the "opposite" way: f(x+3)f(x + 3) moves the graph 3 units to the left.

Syllabus scope

You need: function notation, domain and co-domain, graphs of quadratic functions, finding the vertex, axis of symmetry and maximum or minimum value by completing the square, and transformations of graphs: translations, reflections with respect to the axes, and enlargements along the axes.

How it is tested

  • Paper 1 (a very common long question): "Using the method of completing the square, find the coordinates of the vertex of the graph of y=f(x)y = f(x)." Then: "The graph of y=g(x)y = g(x) is obtained by translating ... Find g(x)g(x)", or "Describe the transformation."
  • Paper 2 MC: match a graph to its equation; identify a transformation.

How to answer

  • Show the completing-the-square steps; the vertex alone earns only part of the marks.
  • Describe a transformation in HKEAA words: type + direction + distance, e.g. "the leftward translation of 36 units" or "the reflection with respect to the yy-axis". The marking scheme gives 1A for the type and 1A for everything correct.
